This is the story of Muneeza Naqvi, who lives in the United States and occasionally visits Pakistan. She read a newspaper article about Pioneer Book House in Karachi—a nearly 100-year-old bookstore on M.A. Jinnah Road that was on the verge of closing due to neglect and lack of customers. The shop’s owner was deeply disheartened and ready to sell it.
Muneeza traveled from the U.S. to Karachi, visited the shop, and was moved by its condition. Without making promises or demands, she began cleaning the bookstore herself. For nearly fifteen days, she swept, dusted, and slowly restored the space, earning the shopkeeper’s trust through quiet dedication.
She then encouraged him to keep the shop open, brought in simple furniture, lamps, and created a small space where people could sit, drink tea, and talk about books. She started bringing friends, writers, and readers, motivating them to visit and buy books. Gradually, customers returned. Publishers sent books on sale-and-return, readings were held, and the bookstore came alive again.
By the grace of God, Pioneer Book House is now financially stable once more. This revival was driven not by profit, but by one woman’s sincere desire to save a bookstore.
Pioneer Book House
Opposite Dow Medical College,
M.A. Jinnah Road, Karachi, Pakistan

A student from Balochistan has made Pakistan proud by winning a prestigious global award for converting banana waste into high-quality natural fiber. Competing against over 100 research institutions, companies, and universities worldwide, Muhammad Sarfraz—a Textile Engineering student at Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering & Management Sciences—received the Discover Natural Fibre Initiative (DNFI) Award at the Heimtextil Expo in Frankfurt, Germany.

After four years of research, Sarfraz developed a complete process to extract fiber from banana stems, convert it into yarn and composites, and produce fabric and value-added products. With academic supervision and industry support, he also locally designed specialized machines. Pilot fiber production has already begun in Sukkur and Lasbela.

His affordable two-machine unit can produce up to 1,000 kg of fiber per acre, creating livelihood opportunities for skilled artisans across Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab. Pakistan has the potential to produce 500 million kg of natural fiber annually from banana waste—an estimated $1 billion global market.

This innovation not only turns agricultural waste into economic value but also reduces environmental pollution, showcasing the power of Pakistani youth to drive sustainable development.

At SKW Foundation, we believe that no family should struggle for basic necessities. To support low-income households and daily wage earners, the foundation has initiated a Monthly Ration Support Program aimed at ensuring food security for underprivileged communities.

Under this initiative, families are provided with essential grocery items including flour, rice, sugar, pulses, tea, oil, and other household necessities. Each ration package is curated to sustain a family for an entire month, enabling them to focus on education, work, and personal growth without worrying about daily meals.

The initiative has already benefitted numerous families across local communities, restoring hope and stability to households affected by financial hardship. Volunteers and supporters actively participate in identifying deserving families and distributing ration kits with dignity and respect.

SKW Foundation remains committed to expanding this program to reach more communities in need. With collective support and compassion, we aim to create a hunger-free and self-reliant society.
